Dean University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Dentistry | Birmingham, Alabama Nicolaas Geurs, DDS, MS, has been chosen to be the next dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. His tenure began on June 1, 2024. Having spent three decades in academic leadership at UAB, Geurs has served in various capacities, including research instructor, director, professor, and senior scientist within the School of Dentistry. Before his appointment as interim dean in July 2023, he led the Department of Periodontology.He plays a significant role in the advancement of dental education, serving as a director on the American Board of Periodontology and as an alumnus of the American Dental Education Association Leadership Institute. Moreover, he contributes to the editorial advisory boards of top publications in his field, including the Journal of Periodontology and Clinical Advances in Periodontics.Geurs obtained his dental degree from the Academic Centre for Dentistry in Amsterdam (ACTA) and completed his periodontology training and master's in clinical dentistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, actively involved in teaching periodontology and implantology.Read full press release here.
