Inaugural Chief (Research) of Epilepsy Section, Department of Neurology

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) seeks a respected and visionary researcher to become its inaugural Chief (Research) of the Epilepsy Section in the Department of Neurology. The Section is recognized as one of the premier clinical Epilepsy programs in the country, boasting substantial patient volumes, three epilepsy monitoring units (two adult and one pediatric) that in their totality represent among the largest in the U.S., exceptionally high surgical volumes, pioneering patient care and treatment, and a large fellowship training program. Two of the twelve associated faculty are PIs of NIH-funded labs, and the plan is to expand this number. Department leadership recognized the incredible foundation already present, and by creating this position, are formalizing their investment in this programmatic space. The inaugural Chief will advance research initiatives, capitalizing on existing strengths and innovations in the Section and related departments. This is a distinctive opportunity to cultivate research that capitalizes on a large and exceptional clinical base and a growing cadre of PIs. The individual will play a pivotal and multi-faceted role in advancing the research footprint of this Section.

The Department of Neurology, with >140 full-time faculty (>90 with primary appointments), includes 12 academic sections, creating a dynamic environment that supports diverse and innovative approaches to neurological care, novel research programs, and educational opportunities for trainees. A close partnership with the Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and the Center for Alzheimer's and Neurodegenerative Diseases at UTSW facilitates the utilization of shared resources for unique programs throughout the expanding medical center with the common goal of solving brain disease.

With a notable national ranking as one of the top 20 hospitals for neurology and neurosurgery (#18), the department is embedded in one of the top three academic medical centers in the 16-state Southeast and Southwest region, covering approximately 40% of the U.S. population. UTSW serves as a crucial hub for specialized neurological care across a vast U.S. region, impacting thousands of patients annually from Texas, neighboring states, and beyond. Featuring 32 research labs, with one-in-four of the faculty serving as Principal Investigators of NIH and/or other federal grants, the department’s research portfolio has quadrupled over the past 4 years, and its R25 program serves as a pipeline for the continuous growth of its research mission.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Neurology, the inaugural Chief will expand the research in the section by recruiting and mentoring physician-scientists and basic scientists. Supported by ample resources, including collaboration with the Section’s Clinical Chief and O'Donnell Brain Institute leaders, the Chief will lead and develop research programs and shape the Division's research efforts.
